Frequently Asked Questions

How big of a heating/air conditioning system do we need?
We evaluate the size, age and type of construction. The insulation value, the number of people, appliances, the amount of glass and the direction the house faces. This information contributes to obtaining the heat gain heat loss of your home allowing us to recommend the proper size.

Why is the second floor always hotter than the first floor in the summer time?
Several factors contribute to this problem. First, the thermostat is generally located on the first floor. Cold air is heavier and harder to push upstairs. Second, warm air rises from the first floor and infiltration from the attic above to sandwich the second floor with heat. Third, there is usually insufficient return air ducts to pull the heat from the second floor (contact us to fix this problem).

Is an attic fan necessary?
It is extremely helpful in the air conditioning season because it reduces the temperature difference between the conditioned space on the second floor and the attic above.

What is a good temperature setting for the thermostat?
There is no correct temperature. The correct temperature is where your family feels comfortable. Keep in mind that an air conditioning system is designed to give you about a 20 degree difference from the outside temperature.

What efficiency rating should I choose for my new system?
You can select a heating unit from 80-95% efficient. Your selection process should include the price range you’re looking for and the amount of time you plan to remain in your home. Air conditioning efficiencies’ are determined by S.E.E.R (seasonal energy efficiency rating). An entry level air conditioner is a 13 SEER. Air Conditioners are available up to 20 SEER with variable options. It is easier to relate SEER as we do miles per gallon, the higher the SEER the more cost efficient the unit will function.

Is a set back thermostat economimical?
Absolutely if used properly. A common mistake people make is setting too large of a differential between their at home temperature and their away temperature. Heating differential should be 6-8 degrees. Cooling should be 4 degrees.

How often should the filters be changed?
Indoor Air Technologies recommends 3 stage high efficiency filters. Under normal circumstances filters should be changes on a quarterly basis. Special circumstances such as high traffic area, numerous pets or a dusty environment would require additional changes.

I have an older home. Can radiant heat be installed??
Absolutely. There are two options. Tubing can be attached under or on top of existing floors of any type.
