Air Conditioning

Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioning?
R22, a widely used freon, is no longer manufactured, as with R22 units and coils. R22 has been replaced with R410A, a more enviromentally friendly freon. If you should develop a leak, the age of the unit and anticipated cost must be considered.

Energy-conscious homeowners are wise to upgrade to a higher SEER if a major repair is required. The majority of systems installed before 1992 are 10SEER or below and will continue to drop in efficiency as they age.

Most important is the annual maintenance of your air conditioning system to keep it running most efficiently and prevent breakdowns, so purchasing one of our Maintenance Agreements is a wise investment.

What is Air Conditioning?

The most common central air conditioning system is a split system, which includes an outdoor unit containing a coil and compressor, and an indoor evaporator coil. The compressor pumps a chemical refrigerant freon, through the system. The term HVAC stands for heating, venting and air conditioning, the three main functions of a home system.

How Air Conditioning Works

Most air conditioning systems are forced air, meaning that they send the air through ductwork for distribution throughout. The primary function of the air conditioning system is to dehumidify. Once warm air inside your home blows across the indoor evaporator coil, its heat energy transfers to the refrigerant inside the coil. That transfer, in turn, "cools" the air. The freon is pumped back to the compressor where the cycle begins again. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant is moved outside your home while cooled air is blown inside. Moisture that contributes to humidity is also condensed out of the air.
